Fear vs. Courage

     Fear can take hold of us and make us think our dreams are unattainable.  Fear can stop us in our tracks before we even get going.  When we are afraid of failing we are afraid of something that hasn’t even happened.  Fear and anxiety are natural emotions we experience when faced with obstacles; however, successful individuals are those who experience fear and do whatever they’re scared of anyways. I can’t tell you how many people have recommended to me the book How Full is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D. A group of executives at Waste Management that I coached read the book together, and then a realtor friend of mine named Carol Huber mentioned it shortly thereafter. When I told Carol I have heard of the book many times and haven’t had a chance to read it yet, she sent it to me in the mail.  (continued)

The Importance of Humor

     April is National Humor Month and this seems more important during these stressful times. Humor is so important to our health. So this month I am remembering career moments that eventually made me chuckle.
     I recall, as a young manager, greeting my boss at the airport to fly to an out-of-town meeting. We had a very early flight and were rushing to our gate when suddenly I felt something slide out of one of my pants legs.  (continued)

A Great Marriage is Crucial to Effective Leadership

     I coach a lot of leaders whose number one problem is tension in their marriage.  Many of them have given up on their marriage and hope to find happiness in their business lives.  But, this is not possible.  Marriage is the foundation of a good life.  If you want to be a good leader, you have to have integrity.  If you want to have integrity, I suggest you start in the most fundamental place; make sure your marriage is sound.
